Awareness Blog Post: C.M. Kösemen

C.M. Kösemen, born 1964, in Ankara, Turkey, and works as an artists and independent researcher. Kösemen would attend Cornell University and Sabanci University in Instanbul, where he obtained a Bachelor of the Arts. He would later pursue a Masters of Arts degree in documentary and film at Goldsmiths College, London.

One thing I find really interesting about Kösemen's work is the sheer variety of subjects he covers. As seen in the image above, Kösemen's work ranges from surrealist scenes, to scientific and paleoart, imagining past and future animals in his own unique styles. Putting his skills to good use, Kösemen has multiple published works. His most famous work, and the way I was introduced to him was his epic saga spanning billions of years, "All Tomorrows". Personally, I love this work, the story on its own is captivating and brilliant, made all the better by the myriad of scientific drawings of the futuristic humans and species included. Additionally, "All Yesterdays" is another successful book he has co-written with Paleo-artist John Conway, focusing on depicting past life forms could have looked like, which although less fantastical than his other works is impressive for the sheer amount of material and creativity present, with "All yesterdays" being described as the best paleo-art book of the past 40 years.

Personally, I find his work very interesting and would love to do some studies as well. Paleo-art and scientific art has always been an interest of mine, and although it can sometimes be seen as less creative, Kösemen's work proves that the same creativity necessary for other styles of art is is applicable to scientific art as well. Also, I have recently been experimenting with graphite and feel like some of his works would be very good studies to try and master my craft, especially due to the similar nature of both our works.
